In Memory - Donald E. Willett

My late uncle, Donald E, Willett took me on my first duck hunt on Toledo Bend in the fall of 1970. I was 14. This is where the love and pursuit of duck hunting took root deep in the heart of a young boy. I'm sure you know what my Christmas list was that year. I still have to this day my first decoys and duck call. When the next season rolled around, I headed to the duck blind with a brand new 12 gauge automatic shot gun, that I still hunt with to this day. It has shot lead, buck shot, and steal all from the same barrel, it's been at the bottom of a lake, dropped in the gulf of Mexico. I feel in about 9 or 8 more years, it'll be broke in. It's just a gun, but it has been my companion in the lakes and woods.

If there was only one word to describe my uncle, it would be outdoorsman. I was privileged to call him my uncle, through the early years of sharing a duck blind or fishing boat with him, or on a deer hunt, he taught me a lot about hunting & fishing, but the one thing he drove in my head at a very young age was if you kill something you make sure it doesn't go to waste.

This came with a hard lesson at a very early age on a duck hunt. it was a 1/2 mile hike back through the swamp bottoms to the flooded timber carrying decoys and shot gun on that cold gray winter day wearing hip boots. When the sky is gray with no sun, and all the timber looks the same, you guessed it, lost for several hours with water up to my chest, remember I was wearing hip boots. I finally shot my way out to my uncle that was back at the boat where I came out. Boy was I glad to see him and the rest of the group. Cold, wet, tired, hungry and ready to go home...He asked that question that I'll never forget. "Did you kill any ducks?" "Yes one."  "Where is it?" "Laying on a stump a 1/2 miles back through the swamp where my decoys are." I thought he would say you look worn out, let's go home, but those three words he said I'll never forget! "Go get it." At that time I thought he was mean, but later on in life I realized he was teaching me to be a true sportsman and outdoorsman and to be responsible.

If you have the opportunity, take a young child hunting and make a difference in his or her life!.
